Electromagnetic Flowmeter

An electromagnetic flowmeter is a device used to measure the volumetric flow rate of electrically conductive liquids. Proxitech is the leading electromagnetic flowmeter supplier to various industries such as water and wastewater treatment, chemical, food and beverage, and other industries where precise flow measurement of conductive fluids is required. They are especially useful for measuring slurries, corrosive liquids, or fluids with suspended solids, which can be difficult for other types of flowmeters.

It is based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction, which states that a voltage is induced when a conductive fluid flows through a magnetic field. It consists of a non-magnetic flow tube with electrodes mounted on its walls and coils that create a magnetic field across the tube. When a conductive fluid flows through the magnetic field, it generates a small voltage proportional to the flow velocity. The electrodes detect this voltage, and the meter converts it into a flow rate reading. Because the measurement is based on the magnetic effect and not mechanical parts, there is no obstruction in the flow path, which prevents pressure loss and reduces maintenance. The meter can measure forward or reverse flow, and some models also provide totalized flow and diagnostic data.

Features of Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Here are the main features of an electromagnetic flow meter:

  • No moving parts, ensuring smooth, uninterrupted flow.
  • Works with water, acids, slurries, and other electrically conductive fluids.
  • Measures flow in both directions.
  • No obstructions in the flow path.
  • Available in corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel, Hastelloy, or lined versions for aggressive fluids.
  • Can be installed horizontally, vertically, or at an angle, depending on pipe layout.

Benefits of Electromagnetic Flowmeter

The major benefits of an electromagnetic flow meter are:

  • Provides precise readings for process control and billing purposes.
  • No moving parts means less wear, no clogging, and long service life.
  • Handles slurries, corrosive liquids, and liquids with suspended solids easily.
  • No obstruction in the flow reduces pressure loss and pumping energy requirements.
  • Compatible with modern monitoring and automation systems.
  • Useful in processes where the flow can reverse.
  • Real-time flow monitoring ensures better efficiency, quality, and safety.

Applications of Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Look at some of the common applications of electromagnetic flow meters:

  • Measuring clean water, wastewater, and sewage flows in water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Handling corrosive chemicals, acids, and slurries in process pipelines in chemical plants.
  • Monitoring syrups, juices, dairy products, and other conductive liquids in food and beverage plants.
  • Measuring pulps, slurries, and process water in paper manufacturing plants.
  • Hand slurry flows, tailings, and process liquids in the mining and minerals industries.
  • Accurate flow measurement for liquid formulations and dosing in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants.
  • Handle boiler feedwater, cooling water, and other conductive liquid flows in power plants.
