Differential Pressure Transmitters

A Differential Pressure Transmitter is an instrument used to measure the difference in pressure between two points in a process system. This difference can then be used to determine flow rate, level, or pressure drop across equipment such as filters, pipes, or tanks. Differential pressure transmitters have two pressure inlets – a high-pressure side (HP) and a low-pressure side (LP). The device measures the difference between these two pressures and converts it into an electrical signal. When installed across a restriction, the pressure drop is proportional to the flow rate of the fluid. Similarly, when connected to a tank or vessel, the pressure difference between the liquid column and the reference point can indicate the liquid level. The transmitter’s internal sensing element (such as a diaphragm or capacitance cell) detects the pressure difference and sends this data to the control system as a standardised signal.

Features of Differential Pressure Transmitters

Here are some of the major features of a differential pressure transmitter:

  • Designed with corrosion-resistant materials to withstand harsh industrial environments.
  • Provides reliable long-term performance with minimal drift.
  • Available for low to very high differential pressures.
  • Ensures accuracy under varying temperature conditions.
  • Can be mounted in multiple orientations or integrated with primary flow elements.
  • Suitable for hazardous and outdoor installations.

Benefits of Differential Pressure Transmitters

Look at some of the key benefits of differential pressure transmitters:

  • Can measure flow, level, or pressure difference.
  • Ensures consistent process control and safety.
  • Simple installation and minimal maintenance compared to mechanical systems.
  • Built to withstand high pressures, temperatures, and corrosive elements.
  • Compatible with modern control systems and automation setups.
  • Real-time monitoring allows for faster decision-making and optimised performance.
  • Fewer moving parts mean reduced wear and downtime.
  • Smart transmitters can be calibrated or diagnosed from control rooms.

Applications of Differential Pressure Transmitters

Proxitech is the leading differential pressure transmitter supplier for various industries.

  • Used with orifice plates, venturi tubes, or pitot tubes to calculate liquid, gas, or steam flow rates.
  • Measures liquid levels in pressurised or open tanks by detecting hydrostatic pressure differences.
  • Tracks pressure drops across filters, strainers, and pumps to detect blockages or wear.
  • Monitors pressure loss to maintain safe and efficient fluid transport in pipeline systems.
  • Measures differential pressure for steam flow and drum level control in boiler and steam systems.
  • Used for airflow and duct pressure monitoring in HVAC and building systems.
  • Critical for process control, safety systems, and energy management in oil & gas and chemical plants.
