Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

A Coriolis mass flow meter is a highly accurate device used to measure the mass flow rate of liquids and gases. Unlike traditional flow meters that measure volume, the Coriolis mass flow meter directly measures mass. It operates based on the Coriolis effect, which is the natural force that acts on a moving mass when it travels through a rotating or vibrating system. Inside the meter, the fluid flows through one or more vibrating tubes. As the fluid moves, it causes a slight twisting motion in the tubes due to the Coriolis force. The twist is detected by sensors positioned along the tubes and measures the phase difference between the inlet and outlet vibrations. This phase difference is directly proportional to the mass flow rate of the fluid. Additionally, the meter can measure fluid density and temperature, providing a complete set of flow data in one device.

Features of Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Look at some of the major features of Coriolis mass flow meters:

  • Provides accurate mass flow readings without the need for additional calculations.
  • Measures mass flow, density, temperature, and sometimes volumetric flow simultaneously.
  • There is less maintenance because it has no moving parts, ensuring long-term stability.
  • Works with liquids, slurries, and gases, including viscous or non-conductive materials.
  • Unaffected by viscosity, pressure, or temperature variations.
It can measure flow in both directions.

Benefits of Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

There are several benefits of a Coriolis mass flow meter:

  • With no moving parts, it requires minimal servicing and has a long operational life.
  • Measures multiple parameters (mass, density, temperature) with a single device.
  • Real-time, accurate data helps optimise efficiency and quality.
  • No additional pressure loss due to its smooth flow path.
  • Closed design eliminates leaks and exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Performs reliably even in harsh process environments.

Applications of Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Here are some of the common applications of Coriolis mass flow meters:

  • Used in oil and gas industry for accurate measurement of crude oil, refined fuels, and natural gas for custody transfer and process control.
  • Used in chemical and petrochemical plants for precise dosing and blending of chemicals and additives.
  • In the food and beverage industry, it is used to monitor syrups, dairy products, and other viscous or multiphase liquids.
  • In pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, it is used to ensure consistent ingredient ratios and batch accuracy.
  • Used in chemical dosing and process monitoring in water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Used to measure the flow of Fuel oil, condensate, and feedwater in power generation plants.
  • In the pulp and paper industry, it is used for measuring slurries, coatings, and additives.
