Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
A clamp on ultrasonic flow meter is a non-intrusive device used to measure the flow rate of liquids in a pipe using high-frequency sound without cutting or tapping into it. Two transducers are clamped to the outside of the pipe and alternately transmit and receive ultrasonic signals through the pipe wall and the flowing liquid. The meter accurately calculates the liquid’s velocity by measuring the time difference between the sound waves traveling with and against the flow. The volumetric flow rate is determined by the velocity combined with the pipe’s internal dimensions.
Features of Clamp on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Take a look at some of the major features of a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter:
- Installs outside the pipe, so no cutting or process interruption.
- Compatible with various pipe materials.
- High accuracy and repeatability.
- Suitable for a wide range of pipe sizes, from small-diameter tubes to large industrial pipelines.
- Available for both spot measurements and continuous monitoring.
- No pressure loss or contamination risk because it never contacts the fluid directly.
- Minimal wear and tear, as it has no moving parts.
Benefits of Clamp on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
The benefits of clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters are:
- The clamp-on design allows quick setup without cutting pipes, stopping flow, or modifying existing systems. This saves time, labour, and costs during installation.
- Because it measures from outside the pipe, the meter can be installed or serviced while the system remains operational.
- The sensor never comes into contact with the liquid, eliminating the risk of leaks, contamination, or pressure loss.
- Works effectively on a wide range of pipe materials and diameters, making it suitable for multiple industries and fluid types.
- With no moving parts and minimal maintenance, it offers long-term reliability and low ownership costs.
- Provides stable and precise readings, ensuring reliable data for process control and flow monitoring.
- Available in both fixed and portable models, allowing use in permanent setups or temporary field measurements.
- As it creates no pressure drop, it does not increase system energy consumption.
- Ideal for industries where cleanliness and safety are critical, such as food, beverage, and pharmaceuticals.
- Easily connects with existing monitoring or control systems through multiple output and communication options.
Applications of Clamp on Ultrasonic Flow Meter
The following are some of the major applications of a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter:
- Monitor flow in water distribution and treatment systems.
- Measure chilled or hot water circulation in HVAC systems.
- Flow monitoring in pipelines and processing units at oil and gas plants.
- Handling corrosive or clean process fluids in chemical industries.
- Cooling water and condensate flow measurement in power plants.
- Hygienic flow measurement without pipe penetration in food and beverage plants.
- Monitoring water usage in large pipe networks in irrigation and agriculture.
